Absolute value computation

Q:  What is -|653 +47|?

A:  First, we do the computation that is inside the absolute value signs: 653 + 47 = 700.  So, we get:

-|653 +47| = -|700|

Next, the absolute value signs “turn” the number that is inside of them to a positive (since the 700 inside is already positive, this is no matter)… And, the negative that is out in front just hangs out to get:

-|653 +47| = -|700| = -(700) = -700.
