**Q: Solve for x:**

**(a) 10x + 3 = 0**

**(b) 10x + 3 < 0**

A: OK… Let’s start with the first one:

(a) 10x + 3 = 0

The goal is to get x by itself so we know what it equals. I want to get ride of the +3, so I am going to subtract 3 from both sides:

10x + 3 – 3 = 0 – 3

Notice how the +3 and -3 on the left side will cancel out???

10x = -3

Now, there is a 10 multiplying the x. I am going to divide both sides by 10 to get rid of it:

10x / 10 = -3 / 10

Notice how the 10/10 cancels out (turn to 1)?

**x = -3/10**

(b) We do the same steps for this part as well:

10x + 3 < 0

Subtract 3 from both sides:

10x + 3 – 3 < 0 – 3

10x < -3

10x/10 < -3/10

**x < -3/10**
